early 17th century; earliest use found in John Paget (d. 1638), Reformed minister in the Netherlands. From Hebrew ṣīṣīṯ tassel attached to traditional garments worn by Jewish men, cognate with Aramaic ṣīṣīṯā, Syriac ṣūṣīṯā, in the same sense, and also to ṣīṣītu part of a loom, Arabic ṣīṣiya cockspur, thorn of a weaver (an implement used for making the warp and woof even), further etymology uncertain
